What is Microsoft Copilot?

/ Quick answer

Microsoft Copilot is a family of AI assistants integrated into Microsoft 365 apps. It can draft documents, summarize meetings and emails, analyze Excel data, build PowerPoints, and query SharePoint content using your tenant's own data.

Microsoft Copilot is the umbrella name for Microsoft's AI assistants. The most important variant for businesses is Microsoft 365 Copilot — the AI integrated into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint that uses your organization's own data as context.

What M365 Copilot does

The data trust point

M365 Copilot uses your tenant data (emails, documents, Teams chats, SharePoint) to ground its responses. Microsoft contractually commits that this data is NOT used to train shared foundation models. Your data stays in your tenant. The trade-off: Copilot is only as smart about your business as your data governance is clean. If sharing is loose, Copilot will surface things to users who shouldn't see them.

Licensing

Microsoft 365 Copilot is $30/user/month on top of an eligible M365 plan (Business Standard, Business Premium, E3, E5). Prerequisites include the underlying license, Entra ID, and a tenant in good standing.

The deployment work

Most organizations need 30-90 days of readiness work before broad Copilot rollout:

Skip this work and Copilot becomes either a vehicle for data exposure or a $30/month feature nobody uses.
